  2. Facilitate the provision of health services to those who are deaf and hard of hearing.
  3. The Hear4UFoundation supports and develops sustainable initiatives that empower deaf and hard of hearing in underserved communities in Canada and abroad.

Board of Directors

Paul Mick - President

Paul Mick is a otolaryngologist/head and neck surgeon in Kelowna, British Columbia. He completed his neurotology sub-specialty training at the University of Toronto and was a resident at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Mick’s research focuses on identifying and mitigating the social, functional and health impacts of hearing loss, particularly in older individuals.

He received a Masters degree in Public Health from Harvard University and various awards for teaching and research. His work is published in numerous medical journals and textbooks. He has traveled to Africa to teach and conduct research to identify barriers to health care access. Like other members of the Board of Directors, Dr. Mick believes that ability to pay should not prevent access to hearing health care.

Jessica Rudd - Vice President

Jessica holds of Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in Marketing and has spent twenty years in the biotech and medical technology industries, in sales & marketing and business development.

She has made a personal and professional commitment to raising funds and awareness for health care development projects in sub-Saharan Africa. She has used her many networking and marketing skills to raise funds through events and donations and has leveraged her corporate connections to sponsor international surgical initiatives and secure critical surgical technology for medical missions to Africa and the Philippines.

Bob Liew - Treasurer

Bob has over 15 years of experience in the retail hearing aid industry and was the former CFO, VP of Operations, and shareholder of Island Hearing, the largest integrated retail hearing aid service provider in Canada. Bob is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of British Columbia and received his MBA from Royal Roads University in Victoria.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Commerce from the University of British Columbia and also holds a Certified Investment Management designation, receiving a Canadian bronze medal in the program.

Dan Whitney - Marketing Director

After 22 years in the commercial sign industry, Dan founded ImageSource Advertising Group Inc. in the spring of 2000. After securing Rogers AT&T as the Agency’s first major client, the company rapidly expanded to service the needs of several new national accounts including Coca-Cola, Jiffy Lube, Canada Bread, Colliers International and Shaw Communications.

In 2001, Dan was presented with the Derek East Award for Business Excellence in Langley, BC. Within 2 years, 26 agents represented ImageSource from Victoria, BC to Fredericton, NB.

Brian Westerberg - Member at Large

Dr. Brian Westerberg, an Otolaryngologist specializing in Otology and Neurotology is based at the St. Paul’s Rotary Hearing Clinic. Dr. Westerberg graduated from Queen’s University Faculty of Medicine in 1989, completed two years of Residency training in General Surgery at Queen’s before transferring to UBC to complete further training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Otology and Neurotology at the California Ear Institute at Stanford University in 1996 and a Masters in Health Care and Epidemiology at UBC in May 1999.

His interest in global health is apparent in his involvement in Zimbabwe and Uganda Hearing Health Care Programs. He is Associate Director of the UBC Branch for International Surgery and Chair of his National Specialty Society Humanitarian Committee. An avid cyclist he is a member of the BC Randonneurs Cycling Club.

Deb Maloon - Member at Large

Deb is an audiologist from the University of Cape Town who emigrated to Canada in 1989 with her husband and eldest son. She continued to work as an audiologist and had two more sons in Canada.

In 2011, she and her husband took a six-month sabbatical and returned to South Africa to volunteer and her passion for hearing restoration and commitment to giving back led to birth of the solar powered hearing aid battery charger project.

Marke Hambley - Member at Large

Marke is the founder, former owner and President and CEO of Island Hearing – the largest integrated retail hearing aid service provider in Canada. During Marke’s tenure as President and CEO of the Island Hearing Group the company was recognized on numerous occasions as an industry leader receiving many prestigious awards. Along with Hear4U Foundation Board Member Bob Liew and another partner, In 2011 he launched a new group of companies – Mainland/NexGen Hearing Group – which has grown from 5 to over 30 locations in two years.

Marke is a very active member in his community. He is a charter member of Victoria Harbourside Rotary Club, has served as President of the club and has participated on several Rotary district committees. He has received numerous Rotary awards for his philanthropic volunteer work.

He is the co-founder of the Rotary International Hearing Health Care Project of Zimbabwe/Uganda, an altruistic venture that has donated over one million dollars in products and services to this worthwhile sustainable project.
